  • I was really excited to get my hands on this book, and bitterly disappointed afterward. The personal tales and perceptions of Dan Rooney with such a long career. How fantastic this book was going to be, or must have been. The two historians that wrote the book, didn’t even fact check. Aliquippa on the Mon……. in the Steel Valley???? The Johnny Unitas information was so inaccurate. Johnny didn’t call on many teams, ONLY ONE. He didn’t enter the letter. The coach of the Bloomfield Rams Semi Pro team had his wife do it. Why wouldn’t you fact check???? Just two errors, but there are too many to detail (53). I’m sorry for Mr Rooney, he deserved more qualified writers. This could have been a fantastic book.

There are few people who have been around for virtually the entire history of the NFL. Dan Rooney is the last survivor of the day when men who could reflect past the end of their own bank account ran the league. His tales about how his member of the clergy and men like Wellington Mara and George Halas made the NFL are worth the time even for non-Steeler fans. Must be a mandatory read for Jerry Jones and Dan Synder.

This is a very excellent book, but I did not appreciate the black magic marker mark on the bottom part of the book. It made it look like that book was retrieved from the garbage pile at the printers.

The book provides a very excellent history of the Rooney family and the Steelers.

  • Overall, a very excellent book for anyone attracted in the early years of the NFL and how the NFL is run from an owners perspective. If you are a fan of the Steelers and/or the city of Pittsburgh, I would vastly recommend this book.

The author gives insights and tells tales about the formative years of the NFL,with firsthand knowledge about the formation of the players union, the first television contracts etc.

Mr Rooney also gives a season by season recounting of the Steelers seasons with inside information on what the management was thought as the events extended.

I read the whole book in the course of 3-4 days and I found it very informative and entertaining.
