Why do centers in the NFL draft not go as high in the draft as tackles or guards?
I аm a center thаt plays highschool football. I realize thаt I wіll probably nοt mаkе іt tο thе NFL. Bυt I wаѕ wondering whу centers aren’t chosen higher іn thе draft compared tο οthеr OL. Jake Long, T frοm Michigan wаѕ thе nο. 1 overall pick іn thе draft аnd a center wаѕ nοt picked until thе third round. Whу аrе institution centers nοt valued аѕ high whеn іt’s such аn vital position?
There aren’t as many centers on a team as tackles so it is simpler to get a excellent one. A excellent team has several excellent tackles, but only needs one excellent center.
It’s probably more hard to pick a recruit center… Your Center is the QB of your Offensive line… And given the importance of the O-Line I would spend the money in Free Outfit rather than try to renovate a 1st rounder too quick…
IDK, my BFF Rose.
Well colleges aren’t known for producing excellent centers who can play in the NFL. Most of the centers that play in the NFL are mostly transition players who change from protect or tackle into a center. Some centers who are excellent in institution and are noted for their ability are taken early. Like Nick Mangold from Ohio State, Ryan Kalil from USC and Matt Birk all were chosen in the high rounds. So centers aren’t largely produced.
the position is not as vital as T
If your team has a right handed quarterback, which most do, many would argue that the left tackle is the 2nd most vital position on the offense behind the quarterback. The thought is that the left tackle is protecting the quarterbacks blindside.
Most fumbles by quarterbacks come when they are hit from behind when they aren’t in the family way it, getting smashed from behind by huge D-linemen also would tend to rush a quarterback and turn them into a nervous nelly. (See David Carr, he had excellent talent coming out of the draft, but never developed because he got used to being rushed and sacked all the time)
Also, the left tackle will usually line up against the defense’s best pass rusher for the entire game, so your left tackle needs to be excellent enough to defend him, or you need to be willing to send a double team often.
Another factor is that many players who are drafted as Guards have also had some experience as a Center. So a team may draft a Protect to play on the line to gain experience, and then learn from the team’s existing Center.
The key point for being an effectual tackle in the nfl is about being an outstanding physical specimen. The most vital thing for a Center, is a very deep understanding of the game. Most football players coming out of institution don’t have that, and wouldn’t be ready to step in as a starting center.
Also, the farther into the draft you go, the harder it is to find outstanding physical specimens. That is the simplest thing for teams to evaluate, so it makes sense that the players who show themselves that way would go higher in the draft, and be seen as a low risk pick.
