Five former Maryland football players will put their talents on display in the coming weeks for nfl teams.

DB Terrell Skinner and RB Cory Jackson were invited to participate in Saturday’s Under Armour Senior Bowl, and DL Travis Ivey will play in the Texas vs. the Nation game on Saturday, Feb. 6.

Skinner, who will play for the North squad, was a two-year starter at free safety. He played in all 12 games in 2009, finishing third on the team in tackles (67) and pass breakups (3).

Jackson didn’t touch the ball much in his three seasons as the starting fullback (17 career carries for 46 yards / 29 career receptions for 254 yards), but he was one of the more durable players the last four years, missing just one game. He was also a key cog in the running game and pass protection.

Jackson was invited to play in the Texas vs. the Nation game, but received an invite to the prestigious Senior Bowl Tuesday and traveled to Mobile, Ala., to participate in the remaining practices.

Ivey was a presence in the middle for the Maryland defense the last two years, starting the final 16 games of his career. He totaled 54 career tackles and ranked tied for second in the ACC and tied for 15th nationally in fumble recoveries (0.25 per game) in 2009.

Ivey has also been invited to the NFL Combine which is scheduled for Feb. 24 through March 2 in Indianapolis. He’ll be joined by DB Nolan Carroll and OL Bruce Campbell.

Carroll entered the 2009 season as an all-league candidate at cornerback, but had his final year derailed due to a broken leg. He played in 38 career games, tallying 61 tackles and nine pass breakups.

Campbell, who surrendered his final year of eligibility to enter the 2010 nfl draft, played in 27 games during his Maryland career, all at left tackle. He started 17 career contests, including all nine he played in last season. He missed three games in 2009 due to injury.

Despite all of the turmoil that happened over the weekend that prevented the Minnesota Vikings vs New York Giants football game, the game is scheduled for tonight with the start time at 7:20pm eastern time. The football game was postponed from Sunday to Monday because of the collapsing of the roof at the Metrodome. The heavy snowfall that fell in Minnesota weighed down the roof causing the game to have to be moved to Ford Field in Detroit. Right now the Minnesota Vikings are sporting a 5-7 win loss record which will more than likely keep them from the playoffs. Bret Favre is expected to play as he has been battered and bruised all year and it seems as though each week we do not know if he is going to play or not. This is perhaps his last year of playing in the National Football League and we are assuming he is going to push his way despite the pain to finish out this year and keep his record 297 games played streak of alive.

The New York Giants are looking good this year. They have an 8-4 win loss record and are probably the favorites for tonights game. They are looking like they will make the playoffs this year and the game tonight will be a challenge due to the Vikings 2 game winning streak since they fired Brad Childress. It should be a good game tonight and fans should be tuned in for the excitement.

Favre is not the only valued member of the Minnesota offense who is questionable to play, as dynamic wideout Percy Harvin dealt with a recurrence of migraine headaches that also kept him out of the Buffalo triumph during the week and is considered a game-time decision as well.

The Giants enter tonights clash with some injury issues of their own, though they have received mostly positive news regarding their ailing players in recent days. Wide receivers Steve Smith (pectoral tear) and Hakeem Nicks (leg), who have missed the teams last four and two outings, respectively, returned to practice this week and appear on track to suit up on Sunday, while offensive tackle David Diehl is also expected to return from a four-game absence caused by a partially torn hamstring.

The team that has the edge in the win loss column for head to head meetings is Minnesota. They have a record of 13-8 all time in regular season games against the Giants. The Giants however have defeated the Vikings 2 times out of 3 games in postseason action. All of this should make for a great game tonight.

Today is Christmas Day and there is one NFL game scheduled which is the Dallas Cowboys vs Arizona Cardinals. Game time will be at 7:30pm eastern standard time. For most people they will not be able to see the game on national television because it is not airing. Not sure if todays game is going to be something people will want to watch considering neither team has any playoff aspirations. Maybe the best thing that can come out of todays game is a glimpse of what they need to improve on to get ready for next season. One good thing about the Cowboys lately is they have been playing their best ball of the year. Since parting ways with former coach Wade Phillips, interim coach Jason Garrett has lead this team to a 4-2 record. If they can keep winning and playing well maybe they will be able to carry their play and momentum into next season.

The Cardinals on the other hand recently lost to the Carolina Panthers which is sort of a low point for them. Perhaps their hopes between now and the end of the year is to gear up for a good draft pick. It is sort of obvious that the winner tonight should be the Cowboys because of how they have been performing. Some would consider a Dallas loss tonight as an upset.

The “who dats did it” winning the 2009-10 superbowl and they are still dancing in the French quarter, the fans may be able to get away with still partying but the New Orleans Saints football player had better be getting ready for the 2010-11 NFL Picks season. The team finished 13-3 in the regular season with the #1 rated offense in the National football League, they were just lethal. The engineer of the team is quarterback Drew Brees who is just barely 6 feet tall but has the heart of a lion and his teammates would actually take a bullet for this guy. In 2009-10 the team averaged 403.8 yards per game on offense and scored 31.9 points per game which was also #1 in the NFL. The Saints averaged a little over 232 yards per game through the air and 131 yards per game on the ground with running back Pierre Thomas leading the team with 793 rushing yards. Brees threw for 4,338 and wide receiver Robert Meachem led the team in touchdowns by getting in the endzone 10 times. The offense of the New Orleans Saints was unstoppable last season. The defense also did it’s job and the leader of the unit was defensive end Will smith who led the team with 13 sacks in 200-10 and long time veteran safety Darren Sharper had 9 interceptions to led the team. The heart of the defense is middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma who is one of the best in the game at his position. The defense did not turn many heads statistically, the unit was not in the top 19 in total defense, stopping the run or stopping the pass and ranked 20th in points allowed per game, giving up 21.3 per game. The Saints were 8-8 against the spread in 200-10, going over the betting odds total 7 times and under 9 times during the regular season.

Saints head coach Sean Peyton has his work cut out for him this season, he will have to keep this team focused. The partying should be over for the Saints as they embark on a new season and a new journey. The team drafted Florida State cornerback Patrick Robinson with their #1 pick, the Saints have drafted at the position in the 1st round the past 2 years. That should tell everyone that the Saints are looking to upgrade the defensive backfield. This sports handicapper doesn’t think the team will repeat as superbowl champions, they have a bulls eye on them but then again who can stop Brees and company, if the defense steps it up just a notch, it will be a tough year for opponents of the New Orleans Saints. The NFC South has a reputation of last to first and first to last or at least next too last and you can ask the 2008-09 division champions, Carolina Panthers that, the Panthers finished 3rd in the division last season and were basically out of the playoff race from week 1. Will the same thing happen to the 2010-11 New Orleans Saints?

The game between the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins on Sunday December 19th should be an interesting game even though neither team has a chance to make the playoffs. The reason why this will be interesting is because of all the drama that has taken place between both teams throughout the entire year. The Redskins gave McNabb a contract extension earlier this year which was questionable. It caught everyone off guard and now they are benching him again. This is very confusing. Many people are wondering why they decided to give McNabb a brand new contract in the first place.

Washington limps into Dallas at 5-8 having lost five of its past six games. The Cowboys whose shocking 1-7 start began with a 13-7 loss to the Redskins, have won three of five games under interim coach Jason Garrett but are just 4-9, their worst record in six years. Its not about a rivalry, its about trying to win a game said Redskins fullback Mike Sellers, who leads all current players on both teams with 19 Washington-Dallas games on his resume. Any NFC East game you play, its a pride game said Cowboys Pro Bowl outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware. You represent that star on your helmet and you’ve got to play that way.
