In the 23-20 Monday night victory over the Denver Broncos, Sebastian Janikowski tied NFL record for the longest field goal in history with a 63-yard kick.

The second quarter was about to run out at the Sports Authority Field with the Oakland Raiders up by 10 points against host, the Denver Broncos, but Sebastian Janikowski was not planning on going to halftime like that, and with a tremendous 63 yard field goal astonished the 75,671 fans present. The NFL record imposed by Tom Dempsey in 1970, and tied by Jason Elam in 1998 had just been matched again by the Raiders’ left footed Polish placekicker.

It sure was a wonderful quarter for the placekicker, who accounted for 9 of his 10 points of the night in those 15 minutes, which were going to be crucial to kept up the winning streak that the Raiders began four seasons ago playing the Broncos on the road.

Although he hit a 70-yarder in pregame before, it is his 63-yard field goal which will go to the NFL books. About the record-tying experience Janikowski felt that he didn’t hit that ball very good, since “it barely got over the bar,” he said.

For the first time since 2000 the Broncos suffered a defeat in home opener, and a big part of it can be attributed to the 3 turnovers and 2 fumbles suffered, as well as the bad night from Kyle Orton. The starting quarterback threw for 24 of 26 for 304 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception.

It was that pass from Orton intercepted by Matt Giordano which ended in Janikowski’s 63-yard field goal. And in the fourth quarter a fumble from him began an offensive from Oakland that ended up in Jason Campbell’s TD, putting things 23-13 for the visitors.

After that fumble, the reaction from Orton didn’t take long to come, as he connected a nine yard pass with Lance Ball to put the score 23-20 with 3:43 to go, but the Raiders were going to make good use of the clock to defend the three point lead with which they won the game. The fans were so upset with their starting QB’s performance that at the end of the game didn’t hesitate to punish him by chanting for Tim Tebow.

This way the Broncos lost a game that they began winning in the first quarter 3-0 with Matt Prater’s field goal. In the second quarter the Raiders left things 16-3 with Campbell’s 3 yard pass to Marcel Reece, and three field goals from the man of the night: Janikowski.

Early in the second half Eric Decker turned a 90 yard punt return from Prater into a TD, and the Broncos kicker added three more points through a field goal, which left them down by 16-13 with the fourth quarter still to go. Unfortunately, they allowed one more TD from the Raiders -Campbell- which made Ball’s TD useless in the 23-20 kick off lost.

On Week 2 the Broncos will host the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday afternoon, while the Raiders will continue on the road, as they will visit the Buffalo Bills on Sunday too.

Fork Union, VA (PRWEB) May 1, 2007

With his selection as the fourth overall pick in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft, Gaines Adams becomes the tenth alumnus from Fork Union Military Academy to be picked in the first round of the NFL draft.

Adams joins a list of more than 70 FUMA alumni who have been drafted or signed by NFL teams throughout the years, including at least seven Pro Bowl players, thirty NFL starters, and ten players on SuperBowl teams.

A complete listing of FUMA’s NFL players through the years can be found on their Web site at http://www.forkunion.com/athletics/nfl-alumni.html.

Athletes at Fork Union Military Academy go through the same structured and disciplined program as all of the nearly 600 students who attend the Academy in grades 6 through 12 (and postgraduate). There are no special privileges for elite athletes — all must wear the uniform, perform their assigned work, and participate in all activities of the Cadet Corps.

The most successful athletes are those who use their time at FUMA to develop the work ethic, mental toughness, and self-discipline required to compete at the highest level.

While FUMA is well-known for producing top athletes, it is the academic program at FUMA that attracts such talent. Most top athletes come to Fork Union Military Academy for the same reason all of our other students do — to prepare academically for the college environment. While many of FUMA’s best-known athletes have come from the Academy’s postgraduate program (a one year program designed to build study skills, improve test scores, and raise academic performance) at least two of our first round picks (Eddie George and Chris Perry) came up through our regular high school program.

The 2009 NFL draft took place last weekend, on April 25 and 26. The first round saw some of the draft?s top players finding a home for the season. Some of the picks were hardly surprising ? Michael Stafford going to the Detroit Lions ? while others defied expectations ? Michael Crabtree was a later-than-anticipated number ten pick.

Let?s take a look at some of the highlights of the first round.

#1 -Quarterback and projected top pick overall Matthew Stafford fulfilled his expectations. The Detroit Lions had already signed the 21-year-old to a six year contract with .7 million in guarantees. The Lions had a record-breaking season this year: 0-16, a losing feat no other team has accomplished in NFL history.

With a winless season wrought by Matt Millen, the Lions are looking to Stafford to pick up the franchise. At 6?3? and 237 lbs, and with a strong and accurate throwing arm that has brought 51 career touchdowns and 7,731 career yards, Stafford has the potential to become a franchise savior. Hopefully the new Lion will do better than Detroit?s last top-pick quarterback, Joey Harrington.

Stafford left school a year early but is not expected to start the season. Nevertheless, he is ready to begin his career as a professional.

?I?m a competitive guy,? Stafford said. ?I?m going to try to get ready as quick as I can.?

Stafford continues a trend in the NFL in which quarterbacks constitute top overall picks in the draft; in fact, 9 of the last 12 top picks have been quarterbacks. Time will tell whether Stafford continues to satisfy expectations during football season.

#4- Another potential for the Lions was taken in the top 5. Aaron Curry, a linebacker from Wake Forest, had discussed being the top overall pick with Detroit. Curry has an exceptional combination of height, weight, and speed for a linebacker, which, blended with his strong instincts, aggression, and overall effort, makes him an ideal player. Seattle was able to capture Curry at number 4.

#5 – The second quarterback to be chosen, Mark Sanchez of USC, was snatched by the New York Jets after they traded Cleveland for the 5th overall spot. Sanchez started at USC for just one season, leading the Trojans to a 12-1 season and a Rose Bowl win.

With the Jets, he will have to fill the shoes of retiring quarterback Brett Favre. The 6?3?, 225 lb quarterback has a strong arm, intelligence, and leadership skills that make him a prize for the Jets West Coast Offense. His limited experience makes him a moderate risk, but he is undaunted.

?It’s a very exciting time, a special time in my life,? Sanchez explains, ?so I’m excited to get things going.”

#7- Captivated by his speed, the Oakland Raiders snagged Maryland?s Darrius Heyward-Bey at number 7 overall. Although Heyward-Bey had the fastest 40-yard time in workouts, his undeveloped receiving skills make him something of a risk. Though he may take time to develop, with his incredible speed and height-weight combination, Heyward-Bey exhibits real potential.

#10- Michael Crabtree, who was the highest-rated receiver before the draft, completed the top ten when he was chosen by the 49ers. He lost the top ranking to Heyward-Bey, who was selected three spots before him. Although Crabtree lacks top-notch speed, he is still considered one of the best receivers in the draft, with an ability to catch almost anything thrown at him.

After only two seasons of football, Crabtree received the Biletnikoff Award. Now, in San Francisco, Crabtree aims high: ?I got some big shoes to fill when I go to the 49ers, you know, with Jerry Rice. I am looking forward to that. I love challenges.”

#12- Knowshon Moreno went number 12 to the Denver Broncos. Moreno rushed 1,400 yards last season to lead the SEC and was in the second-team for the All-American players. Although Moreno lacks the breakaway speed possessed by topnotch backs in the NFL, he has great instincts and good vision that make him an excellent top pick for the Broncos.

#19- The Eagles were able to choose receiver Jerry Maclin from Missouri at number 19 after the Browns traded the pick for number 21 and a second 6th round pick. In 2008, Maclin was able to score 12 touchdowns, along with 1,260 receiving yards.

#27- The Indianapolis Colts selected Dan Brown at number 27. Brown was the 2008 Big East offensive player of the year at Connecticut, and, with over 2000 rushing yards last year alone and 3,800 career rushing yards, leads the NCAA. He also holds the distinction of being the University of Connecticut?s first player to be drafted in the first round.

Overall, the first round saw 19 offensive and 13 defensive players drafted – 15 of whom were underclassmen – for a grand total of 32 players.

Here is how I see picks 11 through 20 unfolding in the 2010 NFL Draft as of Feb. 23.

Denver Broncos – Dez Bryant, Wide Receiver, Oklahoma State: Bryant could end up being a stud wide receiver. He’s got the combination of size and speed that most of the best receivers in the league possess. The Broncos could very well end up parting ways with Brandon Marshall this offseason, which would all but assure that they’d select the former Cowboy should he slide to 11.

Miami Dolphins – Rolando McClain, Linebacker, Alabama: McClain is a perfect fit for the Dolphins. They could definitely use some help at interior linebacker and McClain projects to be an old-school, sideline-to-sideline tackler that Bill Parcells would love to have.

San Francisco 49ers – Joe Haden, Cornerback, Florida: Haden is as complete of a cornerback prospect as anyone we’ve seen in a while. He won’t wow you with his speed or athleticism, but he’s smart and knows how to play the position. He’s a good tackler and would fit in perfectly in the Bay.

Seattle Seahawks – Everson Griffin, Defensive End, USC: If the Seahawks go with offense with their first first-round pick, I think it’s all but assured that Pete Carroll will look to get a defensive player with this selection. I’m seeing a lot of people projecting C.J. Spiller here regardless, but I think Carroll will find that he’s really got something in Justin Forsett, a player that he surely remembers from Forsett’s Pac-10 days. Carroll could very well look to bring in one of his own in Griffin, who would be a bit of a reach here.

New York Giants – Brian Price, Defensive Tackle, USC: The Giants’ run defense was not what it was expected to be this season and they could look to fortify the interior of their defensive line.

San Francisco 49ers – Bryan Bulaga, Offensive Tackle, Iowa: The Niners would come away very pleased if they were able to land the best cornerback in the draft and one of the top-tier offensive lineman.

Tennessee Titans – Carlos Dunlap, Defensive End, Florida: Dunlap has had his troubles off the field, but the Titans have taken chances on players with talent before. He’s a boom-or-bust prospect, but for a team in need of help rushing the passer he’s worth the risk.

Pittsburgh Steelers – Trent Williams, Offensive Tackle Oklahoma: Williams would be a nice get for the Steelers here. Their offensive line struggled mightily last season, as Ben Roethlisberger found himself running for his life seemingly every week.

Atlanta Falcons – Kyle Wilson, Cornerback, Boise State: Wilson is rising fast and the Falcons need to shore up their secondary, especially at the cornerback position.

Houston Texans – C.J. Spiller, Running Back, Clemson: The Texans need to bite the bullet and select a running back in the first round. Spiller reminds a lot of scouts of a player that the Texans once passed on: Reggie Bush. With several decent backs already in place, Spiller would add that home run threat and could also be valuable in the passing and return games. He’s an exciting player that will sell his fair share of NFL tickets.
