The controversy over NHL hockey fights has prompted PowerScoutHockey.com, known as the ‘Moneyball’ of the NHL, to become the first known company to measure and publish the statistical impact of fighting on NHL games.

The results will surprise many Edmonton Oilers fans because the PowerScout advanced graphs do show that some fights can have a significant impact on a game, even be game-changers in some cases. To evaluate this impact, they used a graph called the Momentum Meter™.

“The Momentum Meter shows that the fight had a positive impact on the Oilers’ momentum,” says Appleby. “They got several even-strength shots on goal minutes after the fight, creating a major peak in offensive pressure and resulting in a Ryan Nugent-Hopkins goal.”

To gain a larger scope of the influence of fights on NHL games, the company analyzed 1,563 fights going back to the 09/10 season using their game archives. They have determined that a fight has a positive effect on at least one team’s momentum in 76% of fights and increases the momentum for both teams about 1 out of every 4 fights (23%). This research was done using the Momentum Meter, looking specifically at the increase in team momentum in the three minutes following the fight.

Appleby agrees that the controversy is far from over and believes that PowerScout’s unique momentum perspective and research will likely add to the controversy as fans can now clearly see how fights impact games.

BACKGROUND ON THE CONTROVERSY

A Canadian survey published by Angus Reid in November shows that hockey fights are still a draw to more than half of all NHL fans. However the mood may be shifting because another survey by Forum Research published by TSN.ca on December 16th shows that 60% of Canadians who watch and follow hockey believe fighting should be banned from the NHL.

Although a hockey fight can create an exciting hockey game, the controversy intensified this past summer after the tragic deaths of NHL enforcers Derek Boogaard (New York Rangers), Rick Rypien (Vancouver Canucks & Winnipeg Jets), and Wade Belak (Nashville Predators).

As a result of these events, former NHL player Chris Nilan was interviewed and quoted in a September Toronto Sun article saying that it was time for NHL commissioner Gary Bettman to snuff out fighting for good. A well-known former enforcer, Nilan played with the Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins, and New York Rangers.

Nilan later clarified his position in a follow-up October Sun article by Mike Zeisberger. He said that he had not called for a complete ban on fighting but that he believed the NHL itself doesn’t want fighting in the game, therefore challenging them: “why don’t they just take it out.”

The CBC’s Don Cherry became the center of controversy after he called Chris Nilan, Stu Grimson, and Jim Thomson “pukes” and “turncoats” and accused them of being hypocrites for raising the question of whether fights should be banned — Cherry later apologized to them.

NHL hockey fights have been a safety and health concern for years. Some encouraging research by a professor at Georgetown and Washington Hospital Center has provided some encouraging news recently in an article published this October by the National Post.

The Post quoted the conclusion of Dr. David Milzman that the NHL is correct to be concerned about the link between blows to the head and concussions, but that his research has convinced him that hockey fights are not causing concussions.

One of the world’s leading concussion experts has recently made a different conclusion. Professor Blaine Hoshizaki and his team at the University of Ottawa’s Neurotrauma Science Impact Lab shared some surprising lab research during a Rogers Sportsnet broadcast in late November.

Hoshizaki was asked to reproduce the speed and power of hockey punches to the head and to study their effects. He found that players who get punched either in the jaw or receive a traditional headshot are likely to get one of two types of concussions. He strongly recommends that players not take their helmets off during hockey fights.

Despite all of the turmoil that happened over the weekend that prevented the Minnesota Vikings vs New York Giants football game, the game is scheduled for tonight with the start time at 7:20pm eastern time. The football game was postponed from Sunday to Monday because of the collapsing of the roof at the Metrodome. The heavy snowfall that fell in Minnesota weighed down the roof causing the game to have to be moved to Ford Field in Detroit. Right now the Minnesota Vikings are sporting a 5-7 win loss record which will more than likely keep them from the playoffs. Bret Favre is expected to play as he has been battered and bruised all year and it seems as though each week we do not know if he is going to play or not. This is perhaps his last year of playing in the National Football League and we are assuming he is going to push his way despite the pain to finish out this year and keep his record 297 games played streak of alive.

The New York Giants are looking good this year. They have an 8-4 win loss record and are probably the favorites for tonights game. They are looking like they will make the playoffs this year and the game tonight will be a challenge due to the Vikings 2 game winning streak since they fired Brad Childress. Favre is not the only valued member of the Minnesota offense who is questionable to play, as dynamic wideout Percy Harvin dealt with a recurrence of migraine headaches that also kept him out of the Buffalo triumph during the week and is considered a game-time decision as well.

The Giants enter tonights clash with some injury issues of their own, though they have received mostly positive news regarding their ailing players in recent days. Wide receivers Steve Smith (pectoral tear) and Hakeem Nicks (leg), who have missed the teams last four and two outings, respectively, returned to practice this week and appear on track to suit up on Sunday, while offensive tackle David Diehl is also expected to return from a four-game absence caused by a partially torn hamstring.

The team that has the edge in the win loss column for head to head meetings is Minnesota. They have a record of 13-8 all time in regular season games against the Giants. The Giants however have defeated the Vikings 2 times out of 3 games in postseason action. All of this should make for a great game tonight.

Today is Christmas Day and there is one NFL game scheduled which is the Dallas Cowboys vs Arizona Cardinals. Game time will be at 7:30pm eastern standard time. For most people they will not be able to see the game on national television because it is not airing. Maybe the best thing that can come out of todays game is a glimpse of what they need to improve on to get ready for next season. One good thing about the Cowboys lately is they have been playing their best ball of the year. Since parting ways with former coach Wade Phillips, interim coach Jason Garrett has lead this team to a 4-2 record. If they can keep winning and playing well maybe they will be able to carry their play and momentum into next season.

The Cardinals on the other hand recently lost to the Carolina Panthers which is sort of a low point for them. Perhaps their hopes between now and the end of the year is to gear up for a good draft pick. It is sort of obvious that the winner tonight should be the Cowboys because of how they have been performing. Some would consider a Dallas loss tonight as an upset.

The game between the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins on Sunday December 19th should be an interesting game even though neither team has a chance to make the playoffs. The reason why this will be interesting is because of all the drama that has taken place between both teams throughout the entire year. Both teams have been the talk of the league all year long because of their poor performance and personnel movement. The Redskins gave McNabb a contract extension earlier this year which was questionable. It caught everyone off guard and now they are benching him again. This is very confusing. Many people are wondering why they decided to give McNabb a brand new contract in the first place.

The Cowboys whose shocking 1-7 start began with a 13-7 loss to the Redskins, have won three of five games under interim coach Jason Garrett but are just 4-9, their worst record in six years. Its not about a rivalry, its about trying to win a game said Redskins fullback Mike Sellers, who leads all current players on both teams with 19 Washington-Dallas games on his resume. Any NFC East game you play, its a pride game said Cowboys Pro Bowl outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware. You represent that star on your helmet and you’ve got to play that way.

The defending champions New Orleans Saints are playing the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, December 19, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. (EST). But, even if he is matched against Revis, Wallace doesn’t seem to mind. He is just another guy Wallace said. He is a real good player, but I’m a real good player myself. I dont care about nobody out there. I dont back down from nobody. Whoever comes out and lines up, that’s who I’m going against the whole day.

The Tennessee Titans got off to a rough start in 2009 with losses to both the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Houston Texans. The two losses came at a deficit of three points each game.
