Former Philadelphia Eagle and NFL head coach Herm Edwards will deliver the keynote address at the 2012 US Lacrosse National Convention.

Baltimore (PRWEB) November 07, 2011

NCAA champion lacrosse coaches John Danowski (Duke men) and Kelly Amonte Hiller (Northwestern women), National Lacrosse Hall of Fame umpire Jen O’Donnell, four-time Super Bowl referee Jerry Markbreit and ESPN analyst Herm Edwards highlight the schedule of speakers at the 2012 US Lacrosse National Convention, presented by Champion, as announced today by US Lacrosse. Roughly 150 of the game’s top coaches, officials, trainers and administrators will conduct educational sessions for their respective colleagues Jan. 13-15 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia.

Early-bird registration for the convention continues at http://www.uslacrosse.org/2012convention through Nov. 11 for the discounted price of $ 80. The convention, annually the largest educational and networking event in the lacrosse world, is open to lacrosse coaches, officials and administrators with an active membership in US Lacrosse, although non-members may join at the time of registration.

“We’ve targeted leaders in lacrosse who are passionate about developing the game by sharing their knowledge with coaches and officials at the youth and high school levels,” said Beth Porreca, director of special events at US Lacrosse.

Danowski led the Blue Devils to the 2010 NCAA championship, and he has mentored 31 collegiate All-Americans during his career as a coach at Hofstra and Duke.

“Neither I nor my son Matt would have the wonderful experiences we have with lacrosse today were it not for our interactions with great coaches along the way,” Danowski said. “I’m happy to speak at the US Lacrosse convention and share some tips with other coaches, who will help improve the lacrosse experience for their own players.”

Amonte Hiller has built a dynasty at Northwestern, leading the program to six national championships in the last seven years. During her tenure, three Wildcat players have won the prestigious Tewaaraton Award.

“Lacrosse is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, but it’s important to have the quality of coaching keep pace with the increase in participation,” Amonte Hiller said. “US Lacrosse has done a good job focusing on the development of coaches at all levels, and the annual convention is a great opportunity to work together toward that goal. I’m looking forward to participating.”

Edwards, a nine-year defensive back with the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles and later the head coach of the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs, will kick off the convention with a keynote address at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13. The convention will mark a homecoming for Edwards, who still holds the Eagles’ record for interceptions with 38 (regular season and postseason) and started 135 consecutive games despite not being drafted out of San Diego State in 1977.

O’Donnell, a 2009 inductee into the National Hall of Fame, will join NCAA men’s final four official and USILA observation program director Bob Curcio in a lineup for officials that includes popular NCAA, NFHS and US Lacrosse rules interpretation sessions and offerings from the US Lacrosse Officials Education Program. Markbreit, a former longtime executive at 3M who officiated in the NFL for 23 years, will address lacrosse officials at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14.

The convention schedule and speaker bios appear at http://www.uslacrosse.org/2012convention.

Online convention registration from Nov. 12 through Dec. 28 will cost $ 105. Registration onsite in Philadelphia Jan. 13-15 will cost $ 150. Groups of 10 or more can save an additional $ 10 per attendee by registering together.

The US Lacrosse National Convention annually draws some 5,000 participants, and it includes two live demonstration areas, approximately 150 educational sessions, and Fan Fest, a portion of events open to the public and centered around the sport’s largest exposition hall. Fan Fest tickets will be sold onsite at the Grand Hall to the general public for $ 10 and to lacrosse players wearing team jerseys for just $ 5. Children 6 and under will be admitted free to Fan Fest, which runs 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14.

Davidson, NC (PRWEB) September 14, 2009

The College Football Performance Awards announced Toledo quarterback Aaron Opelt as the National Performer of the Week. Michael Floyd, the National Performer of the Week for week one, received Honorable Mention for the Wide Receiver Trophy this week. Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant, the recipient of the 2008 Wide Receiver Trophy, shared Punt Returner Performer of the Week with Louisiana Tech’s Phillip Livas and Georgia Tech’s Jerrard Tarrant – all 3 performers registered punt returns over 80 yards for touchdowns. Former Science Advisor to President Barack Obama, Lawrence Krauss writes, “The CFPA awards will surely prove illuminating and may do for college football fans what objective statistics have done for baseball fans.”

Aaron Opelt’s Performance:

Senior quarterback Aaron Opelt threw for 319 yards and four touchdowns and ran for two scores to lead Toledo to a convincing 54-38 victory over Colorado at the Glass Bowl on Sept. 11. The win was the first for rookie head coach Tim Beckman, who also defeated Colorado as a defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State last year.

With Toledo senior star wide receiver Stephen Williams seeing very limited action due to injury, the Rockets needed Opelt to step up and he did. Opelt, who entered the game leading the nation in passing yardage, controlled the game in the air and on the ground. He completed 15-of-23 passes with no interceptions and also ran for 109 yards on eight carries. He totaled 428 yards of offense, 319 in the air and 109 on the ground. His 109 rushing yards was a career high and the first time a Toledo quarterback gained at least 100 yards since Tavares Bolden gained 115 yards vs. Central Michigan in 1999 (Courtesy of Toledo Athletics).

About the College Football Performance Awards:

The goal of the College Football Performance Awards is to provide the most scientifically rigorous conferments in college football. CFPA recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams.

As many scholars have articulated, CFPA eliminates the politics and biases in the college football awards process. Harvard Society Fellow and NFL Consultant, Andrew Zimbalist states, “By employing a careful, vetted empirical methodology, CFPA promises to set straight many of the wrongheaded, arbitrary, and exclusionary methods currently employed to assess player awards in Division I FBS football.” Distinguished mathematician and National Science Foundation Career Award winner Amy Langville writes, “Most sports awards are unscientific. CFPA is a welcome addition for fans and players demanding equity.” And C. Richard King, past-President of the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport adds, “In contrast with other awards, CFPA has a clear methodology that works against bias, avoids the dangers of regional popularity and national celebrity, and demonstrates in a reliable fashion the most talented performers.”

Historic Player Awards:

The 2009 Punt Returner Trophy and 2009 Kickoff Returner Trophy, presented by the College Football Performance Awards, will be the first national player trophies to recognize achievement at the positions. The 2008 Kickoff Specialist Trophy, conferred to Dallas Cowboy kicker David Buehler, was the first national player trophy to honor a kickoff specialist.

The goal of the College Football Performance Awards:

The goal of the College Football Performance Awards is to provide the most scientifically rigorous conferments in college football. CFPA recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams.

As many scholars have noted, CFPA eliminates the politics and biases that vitiate the college football awards process. Renown sports ethicist Gordon Marino states, “The biases in the (balloting-based) college football awards process are behemoth.” National Security Agency Science Consultant Amy Langville writes, “A rigorous scientific methodology such as CFPA is a welcome addition for fans and players demanding equity in sports awards.” And philosopher Paul Studtmann adds, “CFPA finally answers the question everyone is really asking: Who are the top performers in college football?”

New York, NY (PRWEB) November 29, 2004 -

Â? When newly launched menÂ?s entertainment magazine, GIANT, was looking for a design firm who could capture the essence of their print publication online, they turned to themechanism. Â?themechanismÂ?s forward-thinking design sense and technical knowledge, combined with their appreciation of pop-culture and irreverent humor made them the perfect choice,Â? said Jamie Hooper, President & Publisher, GIANT Magazine.

GIANT and themechanism worked collaboratively to create an online vehicle that is inseparable from the print publication. Â?Our goal was to create a GIANT experience, rather than just a companion piece,Â? said Dave Fletcher, Founding Partner and Creative Director of themechanism. The result is a virtual smorgasbord for their entertainment-obsessed readers. Site features include a jukebox, courtesy of Groundswell Music, showcasing independent music artists. Â?This is an amazing opportunity for unsigned bands to receive national exposure and for site visitors to be the first on their block to discover emerging artists,Â? said Fletcher. The non-linear content navigation encourages visitors to explore the site through multiple avenues. Unique and sometimes irreverent links are dispersed throughout the site, revealing interesting entertainment tidbits, while also increasing the length of visitorsÂ? stay. Visitors to the site also get the opportunity to participate in exclusive GIANT sponsored contests and promotions.

The new site is powered by a unique xml-driven Macromedia Flash-based system that collectively informs the tiered navigational structure, allowing for easy bi-monthly updates to the color palette, navigation icons and text as well as news and music.

The publication, which was recently ranked as one of Fast Company MagazineÂ?s Â?101 Ideas, People and Trends that will Change the Way We Work & Live in 2005,Â? has seen a jump in subscribers and interest since going live with the site.

Â?A projectÂ?s ultimate success comes from believing in the client and the work,” said Anthony Shafto, Partner, themechanism. “themechanism shares GIANTÂ?s vision of a total pop culture experience, and that includes continuing to work with them on groundbreaking site additions. GIANT subscribers will experience a living manifestation of the printed material online as well as obtain additional goodies that might not fit in the newsstand issue.”

“We’ve only begun to touch on what is ultimately possible in this arena. WeÂ?re certainly not saying goodbye to the tactile and visual experience of print,” added Fletcher. “WeÂ?re just letting some more senses in on the fun.Â?

Anyone think we can start a petition asking the NFL – and other sports as well – to require traditional singing of the National Anthem, or out of respect to the nation and the song not sing it at all?
