Five former Maryland football players will put their talents on display in the coming weeks for nfl teams.

DB Terrell Skinner and RB Cory Jackson were invited to participate in Saturday’s Under Armour Senior Bowl, and DL Travis Ivey will play in the Texas vs. the Nation game on Saturday, Feb. 6.

Skinner, who will play for the North squad, was a two-year starter at free safety. He played in all 12 games in 2009, finishing third on the team in tackles (67) and pass breakups (3).

Jackson didn’t touch the ball much in his three seasons as the starting fullback (17 career carries for 46 yards / 29 career receptions for 254 yards), but he was one of the more durable players the last four years, missing just one game. He was also a key cog in the running game and pass protection.

Jackson was invited to play in the Texas vs. the Nation game, but received an invite to the prestigious Senior Bowl Tuesday and traveled to Mobile, Ala., to participate in the remaining practices.

Ivey was a presence in the middle for the Maryland defense the last two years, starting the final 16 games of his career. He totaled 54 career tackles and ranked tied for second in the ACC and tied for 15th nationally in fumble recoveries (0.25 per game) in 2009.

Ivey has also been invited to the NFL Combine which is scheduled for Feb. 24 through March 2 in Indianapolis. He’ll be joined by DB Nolan Carroll and OL Bruce Campbell.

Carroll entered the 2009 season as an all-league candidate at cornerback, but had his final year derailed due to a broken leg. He played in 38 career games, tallying 61 tackles and nine pass breakups.

Campbell, who surrendered his final year of eligibility to enter the 2010 nfl draft, played in 27 games during his Maryland career, all at left tackle. He started 17 career contests, including all nine he played in last season. He missed three games in 2009 due to injury.

They’ve enlisted the help of LinkUs Enterprises, former Fresno State Bulldogs, and current and former NFL players to help tackle hunger by hosting “Thanksgiving in March”, at the Poverello House on Tuesday, March 1, between 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. The current and former players will serve meals. The Meat Market will be delivering enough food to feed several thousand people.

Several current and former athletes have rallied together to participate in this event for the second straight year. In addition of their time, they are donating to Poverello House:

    Richard Marshall, a former Fresno State standout, is in his fifth season with the NFL plays for the Carolina Panthers.
    James Sanders, a Valley native, is a safety for the New England Patriots since he was drafted out of Fresno State in 2005.
    Bernard Berrian, Winton, Calif., finished his seventh season in the NFL and plays receiver for the Minnesota Vikings.
    Zac Diles, Abilene, Texas, is in his fourth season as a linebacker with the Houston Texans.
    Louis Leonard, Compton, Calif., is in his fourth NFL season with the Denver Broncos as a defensive tackle.
    Retired NFL player and Bulldog great Lorenzo Neal, owner of a new food line, Fan Foods (http://www.fanfoodsinc.com/), will also be on hand to support the players and team of Poverello House.

During his three year collegiate career, in which he played one season with the Arkansas Razorbacks and the other two with USC, Williams had 147 receptions for 2,114 yards and 17 touchdowns. Another positive number for Williams was zero, as in the number of career fumbles he’s had.

The other notable defensive free agent is CB Tye Hill from the Falcons. Hill has five years of experience in the NFL, but his numbers aren’t too great. Since playing his first full season in 2006 with the St. Louis Rams, Hill only has 112 tackles, one forced fumble, and five interceptions. While Hill’s numbers are a far cry from Witherspoon’s, I still think he’s a valuable defensive prospect with no where to go but up.

Several of the NFL’s current players will come forward to announce a ground breaking initiative at a press conference hosted by Mike Ditka and the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund on Tuesday, November 27 at 10:00 a.m. at Mike Ditka’s Steakhouse (100 E Chestnut St., Chicago, IL 60611).

The event marks the first time an organized group of NFL players will speak out about and take action regarding the catastrophic conditions facing many retired NFL players due to the inadequate disability and benefits program provided by the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA).

The initiative being announced was created by an active, nine-year-veteran of the NFL.

The group of current NFL players, along with Ditka and other members of the Gridiron Greats will also address the some of the issues regarding the NFLPA disability system which are now under investigation by the U.S. House Judicial Committee.

NFL players participating in the press conference, Mike Ditka and members of the Gridiron Greats will be available for interviews following the initiative announcement.
