The New York Giants, the second best team in the NFC East, won with an overwhelming score of 21-3 over the Minnesota Vikings in Monday Night Football. The absence of the injured Brett Favre, Minnesota?s starting quarterback, was one of the key points of the game.

The Giants have had a regular participation in the NFC East. In recent seasons, the Giants have won the division title twice (2008 and 2003) and in the last reaching the playoffs via wildcard in 2006 and 2007 when they won their last Super Bowl.

For the 2010-11 season the Giants want to surpass last year?s record when they finished third in their division, with 8 wins and 8 losses, behind Dallas and Philadelphia.

The NY Giants began the current season with a 31-18 win against the Carolina Panthers, but the next two weeks, the squad suffered losses to Indianapolis and Tennessee respectively. The Giants began their recovery from the fourth week on recording five straight wins with which they approach the top of the division.

In the tenth week, the Giants faced their division rivals, the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys put an end to the Giants? strike defeating them 33-20. The NY Giants recovered and linked three consecutive wins against Jacksonville, Washington and Minnesota. The NY Giants are currently second in the NFC East tied with Philadelphia with 9-4 record.

The Minnesota Vikings have struggled to be a serious contender in the NFC North. The squad?s latest winning seasons came in 2008 and 2009 when they won the division.

The Vikings did not look good at the beginning linking two defeats, first to New Orleans and then to Miami. It wasn?t until the 3rd week that the Vikings took a win after crushing Detroit 24-10. At least the squad went on to BYE week with a win in its pocket. The week after the break the Jets were waiting for the Vikings to give them a 29-20 defeat on the road. The second win of the Vikings came in the sixth week when they beat Dallas 24-21. The next two weeks both Green Bay and New England gave the Vikings two additional losses.

The Vikings battled for a 27-24 victory against Atlanta in the ninth week, and then suffered two consecutive defeats against Chicago and Green Bay.

The season starts to look uphill for the Vikings and their only chance to stay alive in the postseason lies behind a win over the Giants. At the beginning Minnesota took on the lead with a field goal in the first quarter.

But that was all they had to offer the game. In the second quarter, the Giants put the score 14-3 by scoring two touchdowns without an answer from the Vikings. The meeting was sentenced 21-3 for New York Giants in the third quarter. After that, it was only a matter of keeping the distance to secure the game.

Eli Manning, the Giants? quarterback, completed 22 of 37 passes, recorded 187 yards, had two interceptions and threw a touchdown pass. Meanwhile, for the Vikings, Tarvaris Jackson and rookie Joe Webb were in charge of replacing Favre.

Jackson threw 30 passes and completed 15, for 118 yards, suffering an interception along the way without completing a touchdown pass. For his part, Webb entered the game towards the very end and only completed 2 passes for five yards.

Minnesota (5-8) has now lost its chance to make it into this year?s playoffs. Their next meeting will be at Chicago (9-4) against the current leaders of the NFC North. NY Giants will seek their playoff berth when faced with Philadelphia Eagles, their current division rivals as both teams hold the same record (9-4).
