NFL- Vikings Don’t Want Favre Anymore

Brett Favre announced aE” once again aE” that he will not be playing football. The Minnesota Vikings, who had waited for his decision for several months, claim that they are no longer interested in Favre, even if he decides to play again. The Vikings, and in particular Vikings coach Brad Childress, had been in a rush to hear Favre’s decision; since the star quarterback gave the negative, however, the team has decided to move on.

In response to Favre’s announcement, Childress said on Wednesday that the Vikings will have to move forward, and that he is very pleased with the job that Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels are doing in the position the Vikings first offered to Favre months ago. In fact, Jackson was the first player to report to training camp at the Minnesota State University campus, although neither he, nor any of the other players, was available for an interview since the team was moving to the campus for several weeks before the start of the season. Favre’s agent, Bus Cooke, gave a statement to the Associate Press saying that he thinks that Favre made the right decision when he said his football days were over. He further backed Favre by saying that his client’s physical condition was not at its peak aE” Favre isn’t in the same condition he was 10 years ago. “He’s really tried and worked hard, but every day his body was telling him, ‘Look, you’ve still got the arm. It’s the rest of me that’s telling you to rethink your situation,’” Cook said. “He said, ‘Look, I don’t want to go through it no more. Right now I’m just not of a mindset to go up there and go through this and that. I don’t want to get to the middle of the season and look around and wonder what I’ve gotten myself into here.aE T

he majority of the Vikings were very excited at having Favre on the team with them, but as soon as Favre announced his decision, they immediately began supporting their current teammates. Several also said that they have confidence in Jackson and Rosenfels and in what those two players can do for the team. Defensive end Jared Allen, who was seen courting Favre in prior weeks, said, aEoeIt’s been blown up to we were trying to coax [Favre] in and begging him to come, and that’s not the case.aE And of Jackson and Rosenfels: aEoeI’ll tell them right now: We have their back.

One of them is going to be our quarterback, you know, and we’re cool with that.aE Running back Adrian Peterson stated that it doesn’t make sense to worry about problems that, at the moment, have no solution; he said that the Vikings need to focus on more important things, like getting ready for the upcoming season. His main goal, he stated, is to prepare himself and his body for the 2009 season and to keep improving with the team. The Vikings are a great football team; they just have to prove it.

NFL- Panthers Crushed the Vikings 26-7

The Carolina Panthers surprised everyone by defeating the Minnesota Vikings with a score of 26-7 on sunday’s night game. Minnesota (11-3) had won the North Division title in the NFC before playing their match, thanks to the defeat of the Green Bay Packers (9-5) against the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, their lost against the Panthers took away their chances of getting closer to the New Orleans Saints (13-1) to fight for the number one seed in the playoffs of the NFC. The score was not opened until the second quarter with the first pass in the diagonals from Matt Moore to Brad Hoover in a one-yard touchdown. Although, John Kasay missed the extra point, Carolina was up by 6-0. But, later, Minnesota turned the score around with a touchdown run of four yards from Adrian Peterson to put the score 6-7. During the third quarter none of the teams could score, due to their great defense. It was in the last period when the Panthers scored three touchdowns. The first one was attempted facing third and 26, when Moore threw a pass towards the right sideline and Steve Smith beat Antoine Winfield for a 42-yard reception touchdown, setting the score 12-7. Moore missed his passing attempt to Kenny Moore in the two-point conversion. Few minutes later, the 45-yard reception from Smith left everything ready for a run of three yards to the diagonals of Jonathan Stewart for the 19-7. Then, Moore, looking calmed, and with time to launch, threw a two-yard pass to Stewart, who scored again for the Panthers while Minnesota helplessly saw how the scoreboard went to 26-7. Carolina’s backup quarterback Matt Moore was the main figure in the game. This was his third start since Jake Delhomme got hurt. Moore had his highest total receiving yards mark in his short career with 299 and also threw three touchdown passes and no interceptions. His main target was Steve Smith, who caught nine passes for 157 shipping yards and a touchdown. Jonathan Stewart ran for 109 yards in 25 attempts, breaking the streak of 36 games that Minnesota did not admit a 100-yard rusher, the longest active in the NFL.

For his part, veteran Brett Favre completed 17 of 27 for 224 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. Not his best night ever. At the end of the game, some media, players and fans indicated that Vikings Coach Brad Childress tried to bench Favre in the third quarter, when the Vikings were up, 7-6. But Favre refused to do so. At the end, Favre stated he talked to his coach and they agree he will stay on the game, despite that it wasn’t Childress’ original intention. “Yeah, there was a heated discussion; I guess you would call it that. We were up 7-6. Yeah, it’s not 70-6, but we’re up 7-6. So I said, ‘I’m staying in the game, I’m playing.’ I don’t know if it was exactly to protect me, or we had seven points, I’m not sure. That’s his call. But we talked it out.” “We didn’t have time; I didn’t have time to sit there and say why or what. My response was, we’ve got to win this ballgame and I want to stay in and do whatever I can. Now, unfortunately, I didn’t do that, but that was my intention,” said Frave. With this setback, Minnesota risks loosing its resting time in the first week of playoffs while the Panthers have no chances of making it into the playoffs.
